Some people, shy away from working in groups because one person usually does more work than other group members. This is not fear and not a true reflection of how group work should work. If that happens, it is your responsibility to let the professor know via email or in your group evaluation. If you do not, then everyone in the group will get the same grade, although they did not do their part. That is something all group members should try to avoid.
Remember that working in a group is something that you more than likely will have to do in your line of work. Go into the group project with an open mind and positivity. Look for ways to make it work rather than focus on the challenges. Above all, the key is working together is effective communication. Once that is your goal, you are on the right track.
Here are a few tips to help when working in a group:
- Create a plan - In this plan, you will outline what needs to be done as a group and designate each group member a task and responsibility. You can do this in a Google Doc where everyone can have access to it.
- Share files - A good way to share files is to create a folder where you can share the script, ideas, possible presentation plan, images, video/presentation draft, etc. with group members. This will ensure that everyone has access to the work and you all can keep track of the work.
- Share responsibility - This ties in with the first point about creating a plan. However, sharing responsibility ensures that everyone is sharing the work or doing an equal amount of work.
- Communicate effectively - Choose a means of communication that works best for the group and make sure that everyone. For some, it may mean meeting in the library and for others, it may mean talking over the phone or online. Whichever format you decide to use, make sure that it works for everyone.
- Manage your time wisely - Waiting until the last minute is unacceptable. Start working on your project from the first day you get your group assignment and topic. Doing a little at a time keeps you on track and helps you to effectively fulfill the demands of the project. It also gives others with different schedules time to do their part. Avoid waiting the day or two before it is due to get in contact with group members.
- Be flexible and understanding - Everyone has different responsibilities aside from school, there are some that work, have families, etc. Therefore, make sure that whatever the plan is, everyone agrees and it works for everyone.
- Quality control is everyone’s business - It is everyone’s responsibility to check the finished product and make any changes, using the project instructions and rubric as a guide. I suggest completing the presentation a day in advance so that everyone has a chance to go over it to give feedback.
- Have respect for each other - Listen to each other’s ideas and take into consideration the suggestions of others. It may require you to compromise where necessary. Voting on ideas can be a strategy that you use to settle disagreements in your group.
